What Makes a Great Trip Hop Beat?
Trip hop isn't just slow hip hop. It's hip hop drum programming filtered through dub space and film music restraint, and the details that make it work are mostly about what's left out.
Drums that drag
The signature is a break that sits slightly behind the grid. Perfectly quantised drums feel mechanical at 70–90 BPM; a fractionally late snare gives the whole track its heaviness.
Space as an instrument
Long reverb tails, dub delays and gaps where nothing happens are structural, not decorative. The silence between hits is what makes the next hit land.
Texture over polish
Tape hiss, vinyl noise, saturated low-end and slightly detuned keys give the genre its worn-in feel. Cleaning all of that up usually removes the reason the beat worked.
Where it's useful
Trip hop instrumentals sit unusually well under film, documentary and video work because they carry mood without demanding attention. The same qualities make them generous under a vocal.
